    Position Title: Field Coordinator

    Organizational Unit: Middle Rio Grande Region

    Work Location: Albuquerque, New Mexico, with travel throughout the state as assigned

    Classification:  Full-time, Exempt

    Schedule: Mon-Fri, with additional time as required by program needs, including occasional evenings/weekends/overnights

    Salary Range: $28,000 to $36,000 annual salary, depending on experience

    Position Summary: The Field Coordinator will provide technical & personal support to RMYC crews in the field. This individual will oversee & deliver technical conservation trainings for RMYC Crew Members, & oversee operation logistics, especially those tied to technical skills training, tools, gear, & vehicles. This individual will have a strong in-field presence, & will support crew members in accordance with RMYC guidelines & the philosophy of Positive Youth Development. Finally, the Field Coordinator will play an active role in the personal & professional development of RMYC Crew Members, including their transition from RMYC to their next ventures.


    Supervision Exercised: Exercises supervision over Crew Supervisors, Assistant Crew Supervisors, and Crew Members.

    Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from the Middle Rio Grande Conservation Program Manager.

    Major Responsibilities

    Field Coordination: Training, Education, Logistics (~60%, may vary seasonally)

    • Provide consistent in-field guidance, support, & assistance for RMYC’s Middle Rio Grande crews, & ensure project accomplishments meet project partner expectations
    • Develop & oversee technical training for crew members, helping them build technical skills & meet the needs of various conservation projects, such as trail construction & maintenance, habitat restoration, erosion control, invasive species removal, historic preservation, prescribed fire, ecological monitoring, tool use & maintenance, & backcountry camping
    • Provide direct supervision for 2-4 RMYC seasonal crew supervisors as needed
    • Provide additional training for crew members & crew supervisors in areas of expertise – e.g. service learning, group management, tutoring techniques, etc.
    • Develop & oversee systems for managing RMYC tools, gear, & vehicles, including:
      • Organize & oversee RMYC’s maintenance & storage system
      • Maintain accurate inventory of equipment & supplies
      • Maintain & purchase supplies & equipment for MRG crews & MRG office
      • Manage & maintain RMYC vehicles & trailers
    • Coordinate RMYC’s disaster response teams, including supporting crews in the field outside of New Mexico
    • Complete paperwork with accuracy & efficiency 


    Corpsmember Support (~30%, may vary seasonally)

    • Work individually with RMYC crew members, both in the field & in the MRG office, to guide & support their personal & professional development, including “stepping stone” opportunities for program graduates
    • Create & maintain community connections throughout New Mexico that will help crew members transition to education or employment
    • Facilitate regular program evaluation with emphasis on program improvement & how our programs impact crew members & the larger community


    Other Responsibilities (~10%, may vary seasonally)

    • Substitute for MRG Crew Supervisors as needed, including overnight support
    • Participate in on-call system to support MRG & Upper Rio Grande (URG) conservation crew emergency needs 
    • Provide risk management oversight & communicate risk management issues with Crew Supervisors & Program Manager.
    • Participate in staff meetings & other events & projects
    • Other duties as assigned



    Knowledge & Experience

    • Advanced skill level in all or most of the following: trail construction & maintenance, habitat restoration, erosion control, invasive species removal, historic preservation, prescribed fire, ecological monitoring, community outreach, tool use & maintenance, disaster response, & backcountry camping
    • Familiarity with public land managing agencies & conservation work
    • At least 2 years working in a leadership capacity, preferably with youth ages 17-25 in an outdoor or experiential setting
    • At least 2 years of experience with technical field skills like trail building, habitat restoration, etc.   
    • Wilderness First Responder certification, or ability to obtain WFR certification within first three months of employment


    • Exemplary organizational skills & attention to detail; ability to organize tasks & prioritize to meet deadlines
    • Ability to build strong community & regional network with RMYC partners
    • Strong verbal & written communication skills; ability to tailor communication for different groups & stakeholders
    • Strong group facilitation skills
    • Proficient in all Microsoft Office Suite applications

    • College/vocational/technical degree in natural resources, education, youth development or related field
    • Bilingual in Spanish & English
    • Four years working in youth conservation corps or related field; two years of management & supervisory experience




    Essential physical functions include the ability to sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, climb, balance, reach with hands & arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl on a frequent basis, & lift up to 50 pounds unassisted. This person must be able to operate office equipment, telephone, & computer. Ability to drive an organizational vehicle is required.
