  • Overview

    Position Purpose: The role of the Upper Rio Grande Summer Coordinator is to ensure proper functioning of crew logistics in accordance with RMYC’s guidelines and the philosophy of Positive Youth Development (PYD). The coordinator will oversee multiple projects and crews, support the personal and professional development of crew members, and promote a culture of safety at all times, all while supporting Crew Supervisors in meeting expectations of project quality and efficiency.

    Reports to:  Upper Rio Grande Program Manager

    Schedule: Typical schedule is 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday-Friday, with additional time as required by program responsibilities

    Location:  Based out of Taos, with travel around the Upper Rio Grande Region to areas such as Rio Grande del Norte National Monument, Valle Vidal, and Mora







    Program Coordination

    • Care for and coordinate projects and partnerships for summer season crews, including NMYCC crews
    • Communicate with project partners to ensure timely completion of project activities and outcomes
    • Regularly communicate project timelines to Crew Supervisors, crews, and Program Manager
    • Oversee NMYCC crews with emphasis on contract agreements and NMYCC guidelines
    • Work closely with Program Manager in tracking and management of vehicles, tools, supplies, and equipment
    • Provide general oversight for program operations
    • Provide general risk management oversight and communicate risk management issues with Crew Supervisors and Program Manager


    Personnel Management and Training

    • Directly supervise, coach, and guide crew supervisors, ensuring PYD, professional and efficient crew operations, and the fulfillment of RMYC mission
    • Communicate and manage corpsmember performance or behavioral issues with Crew Supervisors
    • Collaborate with RMYC Training Department on weekly education session design and coordination
    • Provide technical training for Summer Program in areas of expertise – trail construction and maintenance techniques, habitat/wetland restoration, erosion control, invasive species removal, historic preservation, environmental education, community garden construction, community outreach and/or tool use/maintenance


    Administrative Duties

    • Coordinate completion of project reporting (Project Impact Forms) on summer and NMYCC crews to inform bi-weekly reports
    • Assist crew supervisors in tracking and coding all projects, expenses, and in-kind contributions
    • Complete paperwork with accuracy and efficiency



    • Participate in staff and program meetings
    • Substitute for Crew Supervisors when necessary
    • Work with other staff members on a variety of events and projects
    • Other duties as assigned






    • Familiarity with public land managing agencies and conservation work
    • Advanced skill level in all or most of the following: trail construction and maintenance, landscaping, fencing, and hand tool use and maintenance
    • Knowledge of local community, regional contacts, and agency partnerships



    • Experience with positive youth development and working with youth ages 17-25
    • Experience working with young people, preferably in an outdoor and/or experiential setting.
    • Experience overseeing staff and projects



    • Exemplary organizational skills
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills
    • Good group facilitation skills
    • Proficient in all Microsoft Office Suite applications
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to organize tasks and prioritize to meet deadlines
    • Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or higher medical certification

    Preferred Experience / Education / Certification:

    • College/vocational/ technical degree in education, natural resources, youth development or a related field
    • Three or more seasons of experience in a youth conservation corps or similar field
    • Two or more years (or seasonal equivalent) of supervisory experience
    • Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or higher medical certification


    Travel Requirements:

    • Periodic overnight travel and non-traditional work hours, inclusive of weekend and evening hours


    Physical Activities and Requirements

    To successfully perform essential functions of this position, the incumbent is required to sit, stand, walk, speak and hear; may be required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl on an infrequent basis. He/she must be able to operate office equipment, telephone, and computer and reach with hands and arms. He/she may be required to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted.
